Last week I conducted a sea trial to determine GPH flow from our main engines to our exhaust spray rings.
 
We used a conventional system with a meter in line, which took hours to set up, and hours to break down. It was a real pain.
 
We also used the Aqua Sonar system by Clean Marine Systems. It took only a few minutes to set it up, and less to break it down. We could watch the flow trend on the computer screen as we ran at different RPM's, which was great. The results were almost identical to the conventional system, but also picked up on some other elements, ie. air in the line at low RPM's. The data we acquired was very useful.
 
I was very impressed with the Aqua Sonar, and will certainly recommend it to others.

Clean Marine Systems came onboard to help diagnose a generator fault and also to confirm sea water flow rates to our shaft bearings using the portable ultrasonic flow meter. 

By comparing the information displayed we were able to determine one of our generators was not getting enough salt water flow which was causing it to run hotter than usual.  We then knew where to focus our attention and located where air was getting into the suction side of the raw water pump.

We were also able to determine the exact flow rate and volume of salt water cooling to our shaft bearings after a refit, we then compared the results to the manufacturer’s specifications confirming that recommended standards had been met.  It also gives us a datum for us to work with in the future if we incur any unforeseen problems.

I found the Aqua Sonar system to be a very effective and efficient fault finding tool, I also believe it would be a great advantage to have onboard as a fitted system to detect possible faults and defects early on.
